“Modern Traditional Batik Art” Exhibition

“Beauty in diversity” is a theme that strongly colors the
atmosphere at the East Java Handmade Batik Exhibition held by
House of Sampoerna this month. The exhibition features 3 batik
motives among hundreds of motives currently existing in
East Java.

Renowned all over the world for its beauty, handmade batik is not
only one of Indonesia’s traditional arts but also reflects a tradition
of its people. Yet its popularity is fading away as foreign textile
products with higher economic values start making their ways into
the country. “Modern Traditional Batik Art” exhibition portrays the
struggle of East Java batik producers who continuously strive to
preserve this traditional piece of art. It also presents ancient batik
aged over than 100 years.

The pride toward handmade batik is apparent in the works displayed: Hj. Putu Sulistiani
Prabowo (Batik Dewi Saraswati) develops Suroboyo handmade batik that features a
motive taken from Sawunggaling legend; Iwan (Olive batik) a batik artist from Batu,
presents the rich varieties of animals and plants in his region; Faiqah (Fiesta Madura),
whose batik craftsmanship has been handed down from many earlier generations,
features bright and strong colors typical of Madura.

The beauty and the vast range of East Java batik are evidence that East Java is on a par
with other regions in Indonesia in terms of arts and culture.

The exhibition was held on 01 September 2006 - 30 September 2006
