A Caricature Exhibition “Menjelang Terbentuknya Republik”
(Towards the Birth of the Republic)

Sixty two caricatures by 10 Dutch artists portrayed the policies of
the Dutch colonial government between 1900 and 1949. Collected
by Jaap Erkelens, a Sumba-born Dutch citizen, the works showed
that the policies did not necessarily gain support from its own
citizens.

This was reflected clearly in a work by Albert Hahn Jr., entitled
" De Nederlandsche maagd aan het snuffelen bij de Indonesiërs

(Dutch virgin sniff at Indonesians’ residence), which appeared in
De Notenkraker
, 25-06-1927.

The artists whose works are on display include: Johan Coenraad Braakensiek
(1858-1940), Albert Pieter Hahn (1877-1918), Tjerk Bottema (1882-1940), Leendert
Jurriaan Jordaan (1885-1989), Albert Hahn Jr. (1894-1953), Albert Johann Funke Küpper
(1894-1934), Walter (1898-1963), Frits (1908-1976), Wim van Wieringen (1915-1999) and
Opland (1928-2001).

The caricatures published in De Vlam and De Notenkraker magazines revealed a different
color in the Indonesia’s history which so far has been little known, that is, the support
given by some Dutch nationals to the Indonesians’ struggle.

This exhibition, jointly organized by Yayasan Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan
Indonesia-Belanda (YPKIB) Surabaya and Lontar Gallery Jakarta, was held on
08 November 2006 – 19 November 2006
