 | | A Professor, a Diplomat, an Artist Brahney has an undergraduate degree from Michigan State University in French and art education. After completing her Ph.D. in medieval French, she pursued careers as a teacher and professor of French, Humanities and English, and as a diplomat for the U.S. Department of State. Selected Works |
Beginning in 1996, she was able to devote herself to art, first by studying drawing and watercolor at the Torpedo Factory, a well-known artists cooperative in Alexandria, Virginia (USA). Since then she has also taken up botanical drawing and painting, studying under Juliet Kirby in Williamsburg, Virginia, from 2002-2004. The current exhibit at the House of Sampoerna is Ms. Brahneys third solo exhibit. It includes botanical drawings and paintings from the past two years, as well and landscapes and experimental works exploring the new medium of painting on synthetic Yupo paper. In her work, Ms. Brahney encourages viewers to look closely at a range of subjects from the grace and beauty of plants, fruits and unusual seedpods to serene landscapes and the abstract use of form and color. All are the fruits of meditation and a desire to explore the limits of watercolor and its sister medium, water-soluble acrylic paints.
